August Spending Review

Man, we had a lot of random spending this month. This contributed to our net worth going down since the first time we started tracking for this website, but the major reason was the nearly $8,000 in mortgage, taxes, and insurance. These are some of the “hidden” costs of home ownership that you might not necessarily think about when just looking at the monthly mortgage payment.

Mr. Paradise has a house-aversary post coming up about some of the pluses and minuses of owning a home from our perspective.

Total$10,772.04Total without mortgage, taxes, and home insurance was $2,830.53.
Real estate taxes$5114.51Woo! This is the expensive installment of our real estate taxes that come twice a year - part of the reason why we were letting the cash build up in our checking account.
Mortgage$1719.00Just principal and interest.
Home insurance$1068.00House-aversary! We've been here one year now! This insurance also includes some other personal items.
Groceries$491.80Well, I guess this averaged out with last month which was way less than normal. On the bright side all meals were cooked at home!
Auto insurance$411.00Man, all the expensive things came due this month!
Auto payment$353.60Yes, we have a car loan. But in our defense it is at 0% interest.
Electronics$336.89You know, because of the laundry incident.
Utilities$302.58Gas and electric AND water / garbage removal. Seriously, everything was due this month!
Doctor$166.12A lot! Again!
Pets$110.43New Paradise Family member had a trip to the vet! Also food and toys.
Personal Care$110.00Birchbox
Home$92.98A huge part of this was LED light bulbs.
Shopping$81.07A photo book for our vacation photos!
Clothes$49,78Mr. Paradise got a whole slew of new t-shirts and a couple of dress shirts for work.
Garden$47.00Mint plant doubled again this month! But the lawn is looking kind of winter coming soon?
Sports$45.00Hockey for Mr. P
Internet$42.42AT&T, not Comcast!!
Alcohol$40.00We did a Costco stock up, two 1.5 L bottles of wine, a bottle of scotch and a bottle of rum. We could have a major party! But really this is going to last approximately the rest of the year...
Charity$40.00The second Paradise Family Pet Sitting client! This amount isn't included in the total below since we just took the pet sitting payment and donated it.
Gym$39.00Monthly gym fee - still going three times a week!
Security System$35.99I don't think we set it off by accident this month - hooray!
Cell phone$27.00Monthly refill for my phone.

  1. Man! All those “hidden” costs of housing. Ouch! And sorry to see that “all the expensive things came due this month”. But glad to see you’re in a place where you have the cash flow to cover it. šŸ˜€
I’m looking forward to the post from Mr. Paradise re: the pros and cons of home ownership. I’d love to see your take on this, since this is one of those “big debates” within the personal finance community.
